The Man With The Golden Gun

A Chechen man named Sulim Amadayev, who had led secret Russian GRU units against his fellow Chechens, turned against his Russian masters and switched sides. The Russians, not taking kindly to betrayal, tracked Sulim down and shot him dead in a Dubai luxury hotel. Reports are that Amadayev was shot by a man with a gold plated automatic. Shades of James Bond.

A golden arm, a golden gun

See how it glitters in the sun

A quiet word, a leisured smile

And you’ll be gone a good long while

Dubai’s the place if you must go

With luck you’ll win or place or show

The towers, sand and cool gulf breeze

Again with luck a life of ease

But if you’ve crossed those Russian gents

They’ll track you down, hang the expense

A golden arm, a golden gun

See how it glitters in the sun

Lovely Chinese Banks

What will 2010 see? For starters, there are signs some entire countries may be in severe financial trouble: Dubai, Greece, Spain, not to mention California, by itself the fourth largest economy in the world. What happens when and if the whole jerry built house of cards we laughingly call the global economy implodes of its own inefficiencies, corruption and contradictions? What happens when the US is one of the failed states? Who will bail these countries out? Who will be the world’s banker? Think Walmart. Think of the container ships carrying Made In China to the far reaches of the globe.

First Dubai, then Greece and Spain

The old Iron Curtain too

They fall like petals in the rain

As debts and rents come due

The World Bank trembles as the rot

Spreads slowly through the stream

While Exchequers, the whole damn lot

Insist it’s just a dream

A dream that once the handle’s found

Will turn to gold again

Smart men will turn this thing around

The only question’s when

The Chinese seeing this unfold

Demand from USA

That T-bills be redeemed in gold

And we say cannot pay

The Europeans hunker down

The Deutschmark reappears

Young Brits leave old ones in the town

The Norsemen sharpen spears

Then up spake ‘Bama at the bridge

“I’ll hold them off!” he cried

Then took a sandwich from the fridge

And shrugged and said, “I tried.”

And so it ended then and there

The world now marched in ranks

For every town now had a pair

Of lovely Chinese banks

The Wonderful World Of Dubai World

The Dubai World crash of a month ago is still troubling the world’s financial markets. Dubai World is an investment company owned by and run for the country of Dubai, one of the United Arab Emirates. Dubai World was hailed as one of the wonders of the world not so long ago, having major investments in real estate and finance in many countries, and by building hotels, golf courses and terrascaped artificial islands in the Gulf. A world class airport and a projected fleet of the giant Airbus A380 planes was designed to make Dubai a major center for trade and commerce, and a destination for the world’s traveling rich and not so rich. All this came crashing down on November 26 when Dubai World reneged on its debt to the tune of 26 billion dollars. Stock markets around the world developed major jitters as investors saw their money disappear into the Persian Gulf. People never learn that what goes up must come down.

Investors happily took the plunge

Into the Dubai World

Absorbing losses like a sponge

They now cry “goobye World”

Expecting governmental help

Like Obie gave his friends

With hotels sinking in the kelp

They surfaced with the bends

So now they’re holding both the sack

And mounting debt to pay

And all without a Freddie Mac

Or helpful Fannie Mae
