McConnell’s Gambit

Senator McConnell wants to give Obama carte blanche on the debt ceiling, giving him sole power to raise it without consent or advice from Congress. If it happens, McConnell believes Obama will then own the debt, just like he owns the economy. I’m not so sure that’s a good idea, but who knows. It has been my position all along that the proper strategy for the Republicans is to educate the public on the dangers of the runaway deficits, but not to go mano a mano with the president in 2011, because the president has all the power, (just ask Newt Gingrich) and besides, he has the press on his side. Anything and everything that goes wrong, and the Dems will see to it that things will go wrong, will be blamed on the Republicans, and it will stick, and Obama will be re-elected in 2012. Better to play rope a dope and bring out the artillery in 2012. Obama will own the failed economy and the ballooning debt, and after Obama has been defeated for re-election, the new Republican president can, with control of both Houses, take steps to scale down the bloated bureaucracy and entitlements. Pick your fights when you know you will win, and that time is not now, for in this debt ceiling debate the president holds all the cards.

Sting like a butterfly, float like a bee

Take the impossible stance

Lay out the case for the public to see

Then let the prez struggle to dance

On the rope that he tied ‘round his very own neck

As the jobs and the polls sink him low

Just give him the rope and he’ll write his own check

And at noon on Jan 20 he’ll go
